Maintaining Ethical Standards

Google controls the most powerful search engine on the Internet. In so doing, it has acquired the trust and confidence of virtually everyone in the world. The reason for their success is that Google demands that websites follow strict rules regarding their design, content, linking, coding configurations, and many other variables in order for the algorithms (computer programs) to be able to clearly identify what the website is about.

If the website is not configured (optimized) properly, the programs may get confused about the topic and subsequently, those websites will not be placed on the first page of the Google results; thus, the chances of someone finding one of these poorly optimized websites is virtually zero. This is how Google maintains their trust with all who seek information from them, as the public knows they will get the results they are looking for when they run a search.

How does the Search Engine Programs Determine if the Website is Optimized Properly?

The algorithms are programmed to read the websites from top to bottom and determine if these sites comply with Google's standards. Of course, this process is much more complex than that. There are many algorithms, each with a specific task (e.g. verifying the quality of the content, proper use of links, website design, ease of navigation and proper use of keyword placement, just to name a few), as well as the use of AI (artificial intelligence) that is incorporated into many of their algorithms.

Therefore, it is fair to say that Google is very serious about how websites should be optimized, because if Google displays topics unrelated to a customer’s search, then the public will get discouraged and move on to a different search engine, so Google provides these standards to ensure that this does not happen.

Maintaining Ethical Standards

With that said, there have been recent accusations that Google is manipulating their algorithms in favor of some political issues. This, in turn, can have a domino effect, as customers may view their searches as being compromised. Consequently, Google will lose the people’s trust, not to mention their market share of income. This can result in dangerous precedent and the outcome would not be good for anyone.

Regardless of which side of the political spectrum Google’s opinions fall, we certainly hope that these allegations are found to be baseless and without merit.
